Mien:"A person’s appearance or manner, especially as an indication of their character or mood."
I truly believe every woman has the right to look fabulous, regardless of her age, colour, sexual orientation, size, shape or budget.
I’ve always been a quirky bird! Growing up my outfits mainly consisted of lots of different colours and textiles. In my late teens I spent a stupid amount of money on clothes. Sometimes, my mom and sister would questioned my choices. I would bat off their remarks and carried on regardless. Somewhere between then and now, I toned it down a little. Why, I do not know! Now, that playful inner child is back.
The turning point was when my (then) teenage son told me he wanted to study fashion instead of dance. After the initial shock and excitement of his news, my second thought was “I wish I’d studied fashion – something creative.” On reflection, I’ve always had a ‘thing’ for clothes and personal style, how our true identity is shaped, individuality and of course creativeness.
Looking back I’ve never been a dedicated follower of fashion. I’ve just done my own thing when it comes to style. In fact, I’m glad when something goes ‘out of fashion’ so I can play with garbs in a way nobody else is…!
I always receive lots of compliments about my personal style. Here are just a few!
“You are so stylish. Every day, I wonder what you’re going to wear. I couldn’t I wear the clothes you do.”
“You have a striking look”
“I think a lot of women admire your style.
“Are you the woman I see in town wearing that gorgeous grey skirt.”
For me, I get up and get dressed. Yes, I pay attention to details - I'll admit I have a good eye but I certainly do not obsess about how I look, instead I dress for me, I wear what I feel comfortable in and choose clothes that best reflect my personality. That’s what Mien by MissE is all about.
My personal style is: eclectic, elegant, vibrant and playful with 1970s chic. I enjoy experimenting with garments, generally mixing lots of the old with a tiny bit of the new. I am crazy about colour, patterns and prints. I love modernist jewellery (specifically modernist earrings). I’m a huge fan of Chinese and Japanese street style - particularly the way both cultures layer individuals pieces. My style icons are: Erykah Badu, Iris Apfel, Cicely Tyson, Frida Kahlo, Elton John (specifically his amazing array of glasses) and Yootha Joyce.
I am inspired by surreal and abstract art. I respect Salvador Dali’s creations for its hidden depths - the more you look the more you see.
I absolutely love thrift shopping for those special vintage pieces that have stood the test of time. I cannot walk past a charity shop without bobbing in for fear of missing fabulous antiquated clothing and jewellery.
I love spending time with my family, reading about my craft, thrift shopping, up-cycling jewellery, eating well, kicking my arse at the gym and bringing it altogether with yoga.
